Trafalgar School for Girls

History

The "Trafalgar Institute" was founded in 1871 by Donald Ross who had the wisdom to see that girls should have the same educational opportunities as boys and who bequeathed the bulk of his estate for the establishment of the first English girls' school in Montreal. Additional financial assistance from several prominent Montrealers such as Sir Donald Smith (Lord Strathcona) enabled the school to open its doors in 1887. Today, the school’s guiding principles include offering the highest educational standards to a multicultural and socio-economically diverse group of students.

Location and School Enrollment

Trafalgar School for Girls is located on an officially designated historic property in downtown Montreal and is situated at the corner of Dr. Penfield Avenue and Simpson Street. Our downtown location enables girls to gain independence and confidence as they prepare for post-secondary studies. The school has an enrollment of 200 Secondary I - V students with an average class size of between 10 and 20 girls, depending on the subject and grade level. The student-teacher ratio is 8:1.

School Life

Preparing young women for an increasingly complex world is a challenging and stimulating task. Small class sizes help to ensure that each student receives as much attention as she needs from our staff. A wide variety of extracurricular and cultural activities also help the girls to develop their individual talents and interests. Parents play a very important role at Trafalgar and their involvement in school life is always welcome.
