The Teatro alla Scala was founded, under the auspices of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, to replace the Royal Ducal Theatre. In order to continue carrying out its mission of promotion of musical culture in Italy and worldwide, in 1997 the Teatro alla Scala faced a significant legal transformation: from Autonomous Board based on public financing, it became a Private Foundation.
