Northfields is one of two English-medium International schools in Mauritius. It is however the only one situated n the North of the island.
The History
The school was founded in 2002 by a small group of parents who were concerned about the absence of choice of school and the two and a half hour daily bus ride necessary for children living in the North to attend the only other school of this type available.
During the first six months of Northfields' existence, the school was housed at, utilised the facilities of, and relied on the teaching staff of the International Prepatory School (IPS). As a result of the energetic support of the Head of IPS and its School Board, Northfields is in existence today.
The Initial Parents worked on the acquisition of land, school planning, funding and other basics and in September 2002 the school began functioning as a separate entity in a little house in Mapou with an increased student body. In January 2003 came the final move into the first phase of the new school premises, with the second phase completed in 2004.
Languages
Northfields is an English-medium International school and all lessons excepting foreign language classes are held in English. English is the language of communication encouraged on the school premises, whether inside or outside the classroom. Students soon realise the important personal benefits of developing in an English-speaking environment - particularly those students who do not have the benefit of such a climate at home.
Taking this into account, the policy of the school is to encourage cultural diversity by respecting the languages spoken by all social groups in Mauritius and elsewhere in the world. Eventually the school aims to have a strong Languages Department affording the students an opportunity to study international languages such as German, Spanish, Mandarin and Hindi for those students wishing to specialise in these disciplines.
