Jingumae International Exchange School

Jingumae International Exchange School is a relatively young school, being founded in 2007, and are conveniently situated behind the Omote-Sando Hills complex in Shibuya-ku. Members of our dynamic school community represent over 10 different nationalities which give us a great mixture of different experiences and cultures making JIES a stimulating place for all involved.

We are the only school in Japan to be set up as part of a pioneering project, in which an international primary school catering to the international community operates alongside a Japanese public elementary school. The purpose of this is to encourage and develop unity between the students, staff and communities connected to these schools. This unification means many things for our students such as having the chance to develop friendships with their peers at the public school, gaining the valuable experience in participating in numerous large scale activities and Japanese cultural events.

We offer a comprehensive education for all our students and follow the British National Curriculum across all disciplines. This is complemented by our implementation of the Cambridge International Primary Achievement Test Program which allows us to provide standardised assessments from Year 3 and up which are internationally recognised. On top of this classes are timetabled with Japanese lessons, which, depending on the ability of the individual follow Kokugo, or JAL (Japanese as an additional language).

JIES maintains a high teacher to student ratio, and small class sizes meaning our teachers individualise every lesson to the needs and abilities of each student. These small classes mean that students develop important bonds with the teaching staff quickly and this is fostered throughout the year. In our classes we also strive to promote independent thought, initiative, and individuality as well as educating the importance of positive behaviour with each other cultivating them as the world citizens of the future.
