Avilion Sustainable Homes was created with the specific aim of supplying quality timber frame homes to France. The company was formed by two construction professionals - one a businessman experienced in running a UK based timber frame manufacturing plant, the other a Quantity Surveyor and Maitre d’œuvre (project manager) who has lived and worked in France for over eleven years.  Having both faced the problems associated with building in France, i.e. very limited options, low standards, high prices and long waiting times,  Avilion Homes was founded to offer the solution.

We have already built our own Eco homes in UK and France and our experiences, particularly in the French timber frame market, led us to feel there is a need for a business that can supply the speed of construction and high insulation standards afforded by timber frame technology. Our sites tend to create considerable local interest as people are surprised by the creative designs and fast build. Many of our clients approached us having seen our capability.

Using our knowledge of construction in both countries we have developed a frame that provides a generous service cavity to accommodate the far greater quantity of wiring and pipes required in France and offers a high standard of insulation. We have managed to complete builds with clients taking residence in less than 20 weeks (the record is 14!).

As energy costs rise the benefits of high standards of insulation are self evident but high energy efficiency creates another significant benefit during construction. The installation cost associated with oil fired, under-floor heating is significant and the running cost is rising rapidly. If under-floor heating is preferred then electric heating is significantly cheaper in terms of installation. We have a 540 square metre home in France being heated, to a great degree of comfort, by nothing more than a range and electric convector heaters, in temperatures that can fall to 20 degrees below freezing. The savings on installation were significant.

How we work with our clients

First and foremost, we have probably experienced all your aspirations and frustrations because we have done it all ourselves. We are there to try to make the exercise as trouble free as possible and give you the benefit of the experience we have gained when building our homes and those of our clients. We are approachable and on hand to help you through the process and realise your dream.

If you require a design we will introduce you to a designer, or architect, with whom you will have a design contract. You will not be tied to Avilion at this point. Once you have your planning consent we will discuss your specification and budget. When you are satisfied with your quotation and wish to proceed you sign our terms and conditions and confirmation of order and pay your deposit. We will then engineer your design and draw the panels. If you come to us with planning consent the process starts at the budget stage. We accept payment in sterling or euro, depending upon our client’s circumstances and preference.

Avilion will take care of the manufacture and delivery of your frame to site. We will also arrange its erection using contractors who have the required insurances so that you can obtain the obligatory 10 year warranty on your new home. If you require project management we can arrange this by introducing people or businesses we know and trust. We try to tailor our service to your requirement but the key role of Avilion is to supply you with a highly insulated, structural, timber frame. Any other services we offer will be through associates and you are free to use them or seek alternatives.

Additional products

In addition to the structural timber frame, we are suppliers of high quality Natura range of windows and external doors. Natura have designed a stunning, high performance, sliding/folding patio door that allows you to bring the outside inside and all their windows and doors meet our exacting requirements for insulation standards and quality of finish.

Having built such a highly insulated home why not fit a highly efficient Villavent heat recovery and recirculation system or a central vacuum system. French building regulations will require you to ventilate your home continuously, but for a reasonable addition to your budget you can recover 80% or more of the heat you would have lost in winter and even top up the difference between the expelled air temperature and the incoming air temperature making the house without central heating a reality and not a dream. In summer the same reflective breather membrane that keeps the cold out in winter reflects the heat away from the house.

If your budget will stretch to a genuine post and beam house we will be pleased to quote. You will probably require a build budget of €1500 - €1700 (£1300 - £1500) per square metre but you will have a house that is the envy of your friends and a joy forever with all the high levels of insulation you would expect from an Avilion Home.
