What is the Gastroscopy Procedure?

A gastroscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of your stomach and intestines using a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope. This tube has a tiny camera at the end that sends pictures to your doctor.

Who Needs a Gastroscopy Procedure?

Gastroscopy procedures are most commonly done when someone has symptoms such as persistent indigestion, abdominal discomfort, bloating, a change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, nausea.

What Happens During A Gastroscopy Procedure?

The gastroscopy procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Your doctor will then make a small cut in your abdomen and insert the endoscope down into your stomach or through the mouth if it can't be inserted through the mouth (this is called an upper endoscopy). The tip of the endoscope has 5 different lenses which will then allow him/her to examine your stomach and intestines. After examining your stomach and intestines, the doctor will take a small sample of tissue from your stomach or small intestine (usually about 3-7 millimeters) to see if the diagnosis is correct or not.

A gastroscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that doctors often use. It's also minimally invasive, and it doesn't require any major incisions. If you ever need a procedure, we would love to be of assistance and help guide you through the process. If you're not sure on anything, we're always happy to provide an answer. Just send us an email or give us a call and we'll be happy to help! You’re welcome to visit our gastroscopy clinic for an in-person consultation as well.
