The SMIC Private School, Shanghai

School History 

The SMIC Private School is a K-12 school established in September of 2001 by the Semiconductor Manufacturing International Company (SMIC). The school campus covers an area of 120 mu (~80,000 m²), of which nearly 50 mu is green spaces and gardens. Initially the purpose of the school was to provide a quality education for the children of foreign and domestic employees of SMIC, so the registered student body was limited to the children of company employees. In 2004 the school opened its doors to non-SMIC children, making its high-quality educational resources available to the society at large and receiving a warm welcome and positive appraisal from the wider community.

The SMIC School includes a bilingual preschool for children 2.5 to 6 years old, an elementary school spanning grades 1 through 5, and a middle high school for grades 6 through 12. The school is authorized and approved by The U.S. College Board as an official SAT and AP testing center. The student body draws from more than 20 different nationalities and receives the benefits of foundational Chinese education and traditional American teaching in the Chinese and English tracks. Varied student backgrounds and cultures make the school itself a “model United Nations.”

Since the founding of SMIC School in 2001 with 68 students in primary and secondary school combined, and even today with a student body of more than 1400 in total, the school motto has always been “Honor, Excellence, Community, Joy.” By making improved student development the school’s core pursuit and emphasizing faculty professional development, the school ensures for its students a nurturing and joyful childhood.  SMIC School maintains a focus on education that combines moral character education, small class sizes and personalized guidance for every child. An innovative curriculum that optimally combines western and Chinese teaching methods and an accomplished international team of over 100 domestic educators and over 100 foreign educators work together to create a uniform bilingual experience from preschool to high school. Through these strategies, SMIC School full-heartedly pursues the goal of fostering high-quality human talent as a contribution to society.

School Mission

Our focus is on our students’ holistic development whether in mind or body. It is the belief of our school that students should be instilled with humane values and that the school shares this responsibility. Our school, therefore, places a significant emphasis on moral education as well as athletic and intellectual after-school activities. With a curriculum that broadens our students’ perspective of the world by developing their critical thinking and language skills, we want our students to become balanced individuals who are proficient speakers of English and Chinese. Through immersion in our multi-cultural and multi-faceted learning environment, our hope is that our students eventually become young adults with a strong moral character, a solid academic and athletic foundation and, thus, have a world of possibilities ahead of them.
