The French International School of Hong Kong (FIS), which was given the name of "Victor Segalen" in 1994, is a private school governed locally, created and managed by the Parents’ Association (French International School Association Limited). It is linked by convention to the Agency for French Teaching Abroad, a national administrative body. The school is placed directly under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cooperation Ministry.

Mission statement:

Our mission is to provide, together with families, a nurturing, culturally diverse community that inspires our young people to realize their true potential as confident, independent learners and responsible global citizens with moral values and integrity.

At the French International School we:

  • Appreciate individual, cultural and international diversity
  • Create a challenging learning environment
  • Encourage academic excellence and provide guidance on individual career development and professional choices for the future
  • Foster individual personal development including physical, creative and artistic growth
  • Provide a strong support network with an enthusiastic, highly qualified team of teachers.

A fast and consistent growth

Founded as a "small French school" in 1964 for a handful of children, FIS enrolled its 1000th students in January 1994 and today has almost 1800 students.

Every year, the school opens two to three classes in primary and in secondary. This growth is regular and connected to the increase of the number of French people in Hong-Kong (about 8000 in May, 2009). Numerous reorganization works took place to manage this growth.

The LFI has 3 sites, all were located on the Hong-Kong island. Five kindergarten classes of Petite and Moyenne section are in Central since 2006. Jardine Lookout's site dates from 1984 and opens 46 primary classes. Blue Pool Road site at Happy Valley welcomes since 1999 all the secondary classes. In 2010, a new school will be open at the east of the island and will welcome the CM1 and CM2 students.

1 school, 2 sections

The FIS has two sections, French and International, managed under the responsibility of the headmaster appointed by the AEFE (Agency For French Education Abroad):

  • The French section (bilingual classes included) follows the programs enacted by the French Ministry of Education and has approximately 1300 students registered. Teachers are French-speaking.
  • The international section follows a curriculum broadly based on the UK curriculum with an international focus leading to IGCSE (University of Cambridge International Examinations) examinations in Form 5 and the International Baccalaureate (IBO Geneva) Diploma programme in the Form 6. The language of instruction is English. Teachers are English-speaking. It has approximately 550 students registered.
