The British School in Tokyo

The British School in Tokyo is an independent co-educational day school offering a British-style education to children from three to thirteen years. The school is a non-profit organization, administered by a Board of Trustees representing the British community in Tokyo.

The British School in Tokyo has 450 pupils from nursery to Year 8, offering a complete preparatory-style programme. The class size maximum is 22 pupils. The majority of pupils are British, but pupils from all nationalities are welcomed provided that each child, relative to age, is fluent in English. Twenty-seven nationalities are presently represented within the school community.

The Headmaster and all full-time members of the teaching staff are all graduates, predominantly UK qualified and experienced in the delivery in the National Curriculum of England, the foundation of the school's own curriculum programme. Pupils study the complete range of subjects and an extensive Japanese language and cultural programme is also offered to all year groups. Specialist staff enhance the teaching of music, drama, PE and games, ICT and languages. In addition, there is extensive full-time Classroom Assistant support across the school.

Children complete the National Curriculum Assessment tasks at the appropriate levels and the requirements of Common Entrance at 11+ and 13+ are taken into account in curricular planning. Provision is made at the school for pupils sitting entrance examinations for UK independent schools.

The many specialist facilities including a fully-equipped gymnasium, dance/drama studio, library, science and music rooms. Computer facilities throughout the school are excellent. There are three ICT suites and each classroom is furnished with PCs and has access to laptops. An extensive range of after-school clubs and activities is on offer.

The ethos of a 'Community' School is reflected in the high degree of parental involvement. Parents are encouraged to play a full and active role in school, offering support within the classroom, on educational visits and through the activities of the PTA and PAG.

The British School in Tokyo is located in Shibuya, in the heart of the city. It is a short walk from Yoyogi Park and is easily accessible by public or private transport.
