Keswick School is one of 35 State Boarding Schools in England and Wales. The school is set in a stunning location on the edge of the attractive market town of Keswick at the heart of the Lake District National Park. The Lairthwaite Boarding house was purpose built on the edge of the school site and has been recently refurbished to a very high standard. It is a co-educational house designed to meet the needs of 50 students aged 11-18.

It is an expectation of entry that boarders have a good understanding of both written and spoken English as the school does not specialise in teaching English as a foreign language. Potential boarders who require substantial help in this area would be well advised to consult the website of the State Boarding Schools Association, www.sbsa.org.uk, for details of schools which do offer extra teaching in English. All boarders at Keswick School must have a guardian resident within the UK.For the academic year 2005/2006 the cost for full boarding is £1930 per term. For weekly boarding and siblings the cost is £1830 per term.Boarding at Keswick School is very popular and places are limited; please apply as early as possible in the school year to avoid disappointment. We are already accepting applications for boarding for the academic year 2007/2008.

rish our successful record of co-educational boarding that began over one hundred years ago in 1898.The Keswick School boarding house is home to a range of boarders from Britain and overseas, all of whom hold British or European Union nationality or have right of residence in the UK. Boarders in residence include those from Cumbria, those from nearby counties, some from other parts of England, those whose parents are working on overseas contracts throughout the world, or European Union nationals from a range of countries. The presence of boarders from a wide geographical background provides a stimulating and cosmopolitan contribution to the communal life of both boarding and day pupils at Keswick School.Boarders live in well furnished and equipped rooms of 2 to 4 students. Each boarder has their own work area with direct access to the school computer system, including a secure and filtered connection to the Internet and their e-mail account. The majority of boarders now use their own notebook computer to access and communicate their school work in this way.Opportunities exist for the involvement of boarders in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Recent weekends have involved a visit to the local premier of the latest Harry Potter film, work in the drama centre, cookery for bonfire night, canoeing, craft workshops, ten-pin bowling and skiing. The school has an excellent record for team sports and outdoor education and many boarders represent the school in these areas. The positive application by the boarders of their experiences in a residential community is certainly a very worthwhile preparation for living away from home at University or a place of work.

The School's reputation for excellence and high standards of care has been confirmed in our most recent 2004 OFSTED report which stated that:• boarding provision is very well led, managed and administered,• boarding pupils make an important contribution to the ethos of the school,• the policies and procedures that enable boarding pupils to live and work in a safe and secure environment are comprehensive, National Care Standards are met, and that the relationship between the pupils is very good, with the older pupils looking after the younger ones. The pupils see themselves as a family.

Recent inspections in 2002 and 2005 by the Commission for Social Care stated that:• the school has ensured that life as a boarder at Keswick School is a happy one,• the welfare support of the boarders is commendable,• that all boarders stated that they enjoyed being at the school and enjoyed boarding.

Our most recent inspection report contained no recommendations for improvement of any type.It is an expectation of entry that boarders have a good understanding of both written and spoken English as the school does not specialise in teaching English as a foreign language.
