The Irish Government has been a most consistent advocate of the enlargement of the European Union emphasizing the benefits both Ireland and the newly acceding countries were set to attain in an enlarged Union. Ireland has been proven right. Since Hungary’s accession to the European Union the volume of trade between Ireland and Hungary has increased substantially, while the number of Irish companies entering the Hungarian market or setting up joint ventures with Hungarian counterparts is steadily growing.
